Mediation Cost Mediation is an extremely cost effective way to achieve a divorce settlement. Couples I work with rarely pay in excess of $2,000 for my services (separate lawyers typically charge an initial retainer, per client, considerably more than this). When paying on an hourly basis, I charge $250 per hour per couple in my Baltimore County office and $275 per hour per couple in my Howard County office (available on Mondays only). Typically, the cost of the Marital Settlement Agreement is in the range of $1,200 - $1,400. I am now offering a mediation plan. In this plan, a couple pays $1,500 (Baltimore) or $1,700 (Howard County) and receives the following: orientation session, up to three hours of mediation time and the Marital Settlement Agreement. The fee is paid at the orientation session and is non-refundable. In this arrangement, the couple is essentially paying for the Marital Settlement Agreement and the orientation session and is receiving mediation time without charge. Most couples will not need additional mediation time. If, however, additional mediation time is needed (beyond 3 hours), it is billed at normal hourly rates. This works well where the couple is confident that mediation will work for them. If the couple would like to attempt mediation, but is not confident of success, then pay-as-you-go is the recommended payment method. |
